This has been one long weekend moving into an equally long week! After upwards of 25 hours at the shop (and a rilly big party in the middle of it all) we managed to finish the plumbing, the head and get it all put together! for a first shot with no skills to speak of, we had a pretty phenomenal learning curve.

We tested with air last night. Both exhausted, I'm glad badkitty encouraged me to just get it done. So today, we knew exactly what needed to be fixed. We only had two lines that were leaking. Tomorrow we'll get our propane tanks and test for real! wheeeeeeee!

...and here you have it! our lotus blossom. living and breathing in its base. once again, lots of futzing and redoing and changing and MATH...and mostly, it all worked out quite well. i'm pretty proud of us.

at least two people at the shop today, after admiring how pretty it looked said, 'so, is it gonna spin around?' um, no. it will not. it will be on fire. is that ok? sheesh. expectations, people. just on fire. it is 'my first fire sculpture' after all. basic, people. very basic.

and so now, as badkitty continues to work on the dragon head, i dive head first into fire plumbing. many more things to buy. for now, i'll revel in our accomplishment. we're nearly there!

After a good heart-to-heart, we got down to business this morning and worked until all the petals were finished!

Rather challenging to weld sheet galavnized to stainless steel rod...but we managed it. Pretty good work for noobs at this whole thing. We're ladies who learn by doing, that's for sure.

Now, all six petals are complete and ready to be mounted to the base of the fountain. Badkitty's been hard at work designing our dragon. yay MATH! Looks like it'll be a frame of rebar skinned in galvanized scales. More to look forward to.

Each day we're a little closer to being done that we were before. That's all that matters!

Sunday and Monday, badkitty and I got those petals in shiny shape and started to work on creating their outlines. Though the awesome power of MATH we created some really nice bends in our stainless steel rod. The petal array is shaping up nicely!

badkitty's been hard at work building a model for our dragon's head! we're thinking some kind of wire frame skinned in kitchen utensils. something cheap and interesting...

getting started on the burning man art application today, too.

fire arts is just a few weeks away, and it's all coming along really nicely. so excited to see what comes next!

yay!

/it's ON!/ 06/14/2009

wow! it's been quite a month. so much planning and camping and working and playing. we were accepted in to the fire arts festival! very exciting news, indeed. check it out! and save the dates: July 15-18th in West Oakland.

last weekend we purchased a very large, rather ridiculous piece of galvanized steel. i like to call it the gnome house. today, i ripped it apart and created 7 lovely pieces for our sculpture. feeling way more comfortable with the plasma cutter now -- more like drawing now. now, we have a basin and six centers for the lotus petals! hooray!

tomorrow i will work on bending the metal centers to the shape that will work for the basin. looking forward to learning a new tool.

after much hemmin' and hawin' about the fire, i think it's been settled that we *will* use propane, and we *will* run fire up the spine of each petal. we had hoped to use liquid methanol, but i think that will have to be a future addition...there's just not enough time to make that happen.

tonight, while seeing 'bat for lashes' play the great american music hall in SF, i had an inspiration to have a poofer with colored flame...and a beautiful show with the fire dancing to 'daniel.' perhaps another future addition? maybe for the desert. anything is possible, i suppose.

yay for fire! and art!

under the wire, we got it in! thanks to the help of badkitty, CTP and Charlie. we did our best...it's definitely not pefect, but it's pretty damn good! fingers crossed! stay tuned for results and updates!

/and we're off/ 04/30/2009

We're officially diving into the project today! Got the plans off to Charlie and getting started (LATE!) on the Fire Arts Festival application. Fingers crossed that it'll all get done by tomorrow night! And in time for us to make it to the Loving Tom Kennedy Memorial Festival out at American Steel, complete with art car procession from Ocean Beach to Wast Oakland BART to American Steel. Can't wait!
